What is the Cheshire Moth Group?
The moth group started life as an informal grouping of individuals interested
in recording moths within Cheshire. The group was founded in 2000 and
aimed to keep moth'ers in the county in touch with each other. A newsletter
is produced on a regular basis and advertises moth events going on within
the county. All events are open for everyone
to attend - its more fun having like minded people along than sitting
in a cold, dark wood all by yourself!
Recently, the group has expanded in both its membership and in its aims.
Work is now underway on the production of an atlas of the lepidoptera
of Cheshire (VC58). This is an ambitious project and the next four to
five years will require an enormous amount of field work. We will be out
and about as much as possible so why not join us! The first combined lepidoptera
report covering the year 2000 is now available.
We held a get together in November 2001 to discuss the Atlas project
at Risley Moss (ironically in VC59!) and the structure of the group was
formalised. The first change is that the group is now affiliated to the
Lancashire
and Cheshire Entomological Society - as at July 2002. The second is
that we now have a formal structure with a Chairman (Paul
Hill), Newsletter Editor (Adrian
Wander) and Data Officer (Shane
Farrell). However, as far as the events go
- nothing has changed. Feel free to come along and join in with any or
all of the events planned for 2002.
Joining the Group
Its easy to join - just turn out to some of our meetings, or subscribe
to the Northwest Moths E-group over at: (nwmoths@yahoogroups.com),
or simply let us know you are interested! Records of any shape or form
are welcome and will be a valuable addition to our knowledge of lepidoptera
within the county.
Newsletters and Reports
From its original purpose of providing a list of moth events being held
in the county, the moth group newsletter has expanded. It now carries
items of interest from recorders, reports on field meetings, colour photos
and any thing else people wish to contribute, and has been amalgamated
with teh Lancashire and Cheshire Entomological SOciety (LCES) Newsletter.
Consequently, articles on any entomological subject are very welcome.
The editor is always pleased to
receive contributions! The lepidoptera report for 2000 is also available.
Moth Recording in Cheshire
VC58 has a long history of entomological recording. However, there is
still a lot we don't know and hence there's lots of useful field work
you can do. Records from back gardens, local nature reserves, and even
well known sites are all welcome. Guidelines on the submission of records
are available.
